NICVD purchased 6,000 morphine injections in 2023, but the injections were not replaced even one year after their expiry, according to a private TV report.
KARACHI, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 12th Oct, 2026) 3,000 morphine injections have expired at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD). According to a private tv channel, 6,000 morphine injections were purchased for NICVD in 2023, and their expiry date was November 2025.
However, the expired morphine injections could not be replaced even after one year. The NICVD administration said that the Excise and Narcotics Department is responsible for supplying new stocks of morphine injections and that the hospital will be provided with morphine injections without additional payment.
The purchase and return of morphine injections are carried out under legal regulations. NICVD Executive Director Dr Tahir Sagheer said morphine injections are imported from abroad and are used as a painkiller, making their procurement complicated.
He added that other painkillers are being used as alternatives to morphine at the hospital, and procuring these alternative medicines is not as complicated.
