Rising star secures spot in England’s World Cup squad

LONDON: In a surprising turn of events, a rising star has secured a spot in England’s final 15-member squad for the upcoming 2023 Cricket World Cup. The squad, confirmed by England, features one notable change from the provisional squad unveiled last month.

England had made some assertive decisions in their initial squad announcement, including the return of all-rounder Ben Stokes. However, the absence of young batting sensation Harry Brook and pace sensation Jofra Archer had raised eyebrows.Nevertheless, a twist of fate presented itself as Jason Roy was sidelined due to back spasms, forcing a recall for Harry Brook to the ODI squad. Despite a less-than-spectacular series against New Zealand, during which he managed scores of 25, 2, and 10, Brook’s rapid progress in the international cricket arena paved the way for his inclusion. In contrast, Jason Roy had enjoyed a prolific run in 2023, amassing two centuries in just six ODIs. There remains a possibility that Roy could be added to the squad for the upcoming clash against Ireland this week, given that the final date for World Cup squad changes is set for September 28.Another standout performer in the New Zealand series was Ben Stokes, who made a remarkable return from his ODI retirement. He stunned cricket enthusiasts with a sensational 182 runs off 124 balls against New Zealand, marking the highest individual score by an England men’s player in ODIs.

Dawid Malan also made a strong case for himself in the XI during the New Zealand series, topping the run charts and notching up his fifth ODI century. Meanwhile, Adil Rashid, who featured in only one match during the New Zealand series due to cramps, has been cleared to join the World Cup squad.

On the other hand, seamer Mark Wood is currently recuperating from a sore heel sustained at the conclusion of the Ashes series and has not participated in any competitive cricket since the final Ashes Test.

England Men’s National Selector, Luke Wright, expressed confidence in the selected squad’s ability to compete and emerge victorious in the World Cup, emphasizing the strength of England’s white-ball players. The tough decision to omit Jason Roy in favor of Harry Brook underscores the formidable nature of the group.

England’s squad for the World Cup: Jos Buttler (captain), Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, David Willey, Mark Wood, Chris Woakes.
