Dubai,
The ILT20 which began on 19 January 2024 has witnessed some exhilarating contests with Gulf Giants, Mumbai Indians Emirates, Abu Dhabi Knight Riders and Dubai Capitals registering a win each in their respective matches.
Amidst the excitement and fanfare, Shoaib Akhtar, former Pakistani bowler and league ambassador, shared insights on the league’s impact on homegrown cricket.
Commenting on the tournament hosted in the UAE, Akhtar expressed, “The crowd is always passionate here, and the tournament is going great. We can see it is getting bigger and better every year. I am glad to play my part as an ambassador.”
Reflecting on the regional growth of cricket, the speedster emphasized the significance of homegrown talent. He remarked, “A lot of cricket has happened here in the last four decades. Homegrown cricket is what was missing but with the addition of ILT20, they will start producing more talent.”
He further added, “The most important thing is that youngsters have been given a platform. We saw Muhammad Waseem from United Arab Emirates hammering world class bowlers. This is the contribution that ILT20 has provided. New talent is coming forward for the UAE team, and in a few years’ time, you can see them on the world map.”
