DAVOS: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s (KSA) Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan has held a meet with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Kingdom’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The statement of the Foreign Ministry said, “Both sides reviewed the bilateral relations with ways to strengthen them in various fields, along with regional and international issues, including developments in the Gaza Strip and its surroundings and the efforts made on them”.

RIYADH: In a bid to promote the Arabic language and enhance its teaching, the King Salman Global Academy for Arabic Language is set to kick off the Arabic Language Month in Indonesia.

The four-week event, spanning from January 2 to February 2, will feature a diverse program of activities in Jakarta and Malang, developed in collaboration with educational organizations.

The initiative aims to elevate the status of the Arabic language by engaging with universities in Indonesia that have Arabic language departments and programs. Abdullah Al-Washmi, the secretary-general of the academy, emphasizes the commitment to promoting Arabic language education globally.

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan: On December 19 at the invitation of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani is visiting Uzbekistan.

The Emir of Qatar will participate in the ceremony of awarding the Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani International Award for outstanding achievements in the fight against corruption. It should be noted that this event is being held for the first time in the post-soviet space.

This visit will be the second visit of the Qatari leader to Uzbekistan this year and the third Uzbek-Qatari summit in the last six months. This fact, above all, testifies to the observed unprecedented dynamics in the development of political dialog aimed at the early expansion and strengthening of comprehensive cooperation for the benefit of the people of Uzbekistan and Qatar.

The first and historic state visit of the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani in June this year and the official visit of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in October this year gave a powerful impetus to the development of bilateral relations established on November 27, 1997, and opened new prospects for mutually beneficial cooperation.

On 14-15 September 2022, Qatari Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan Al-Murayhi visited Tashkent to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, where an agreement was signed on Qatar’s accession to the SCO as a dialogue partner.

The opening of the Qatari Embassy in Tashkent on May 7, 2023 contributed to the strengthening of diplomatic ties. During the stay, the Uzbek parliamentary delegation held a meeting and negotiations with Chairman of the Qatar Advisory Council Hassan Al-Ghanim.

Uzbek Foreign Minister Bakhtiyor Saidov’s visit to Qatar on December 10-11 was successfully completed. Within the framework of the visit in Doha, negotiations were held with Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Qatar Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Center for Rule of Law and Fight against Corruption Ali Bin Fetais Al-Marri, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim bin Muhammad Al-Thani, Minister of Transportation Jassim bin Saif bin Ahmed Al Sulaiti, as well as Executive Director of the Islamic Bank Bassel Gamal. The Uzbek Foreign Minister participated in the 21st Doha Forum “Creating a Shared Future” and met with Chief Executive Officer of Qatar’s «Hassad Food» Company Ali Hilal Al Kuwari. The meetings discussed topical issues on the agenda of bilateral cooperation in political, trade and economic, cultural and humanitarian spheres.

The official opening ceremony of the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Qatar was held during the visit.

Uzbekistan considers Qatar as a promising economic partner in the Middle East. To date, the intensification of relations has entered the topical agenda of the two countries, which is due to mutual interest in realizing the huge untapped potential in this area.

That is why Qatar sent a representative delegation to the Tashkent Investment Forum held on April 26-27 this year, headed by Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry Sultan Al-Khatir and comprising heads of leading Qatari companies. At this stage, the agreements reached at the end of the forum on the implementation of major joint projects in the spheres of energy, transport, logistics, agriculture, labor relations and others.

On May 8-9, 2023, in turn, Minister of Investment, Industry and Trade of Uzbekistan Laziz Kudratov visited Doha, where he met with representatives of a number of ministries and leading companies of Qatar to discuss further prospects for expanding trade, economic and investment cooperation.

Today, a number of investment projects with the participation of Qatari companies are being implemented in Uzbekistan. One of them will be the launch in 2024 in Syrdarya region of a thermal power plant with a capacity of 1600 MW, the construction of which is being carried out by the Qatari company «Nebras Power» together with French and Japanese partners «EDF» and «Sojitz Corporation».

The projects planned for realization in Uzbekistan in cooperation with Qatari company «Al-Mirqab» were discussed during the visit of former Prime Minister of Qatar, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim Al-Thani to our country in November this year.

Uzbekistan and Qatar are interested in the formation of the shortest, reliable and safe transport and logistics corridors connecting Central Asia with the gulf countries. Prospects of jointly promoting the realization of the strategic project to create the Trans-Afghan Railway Corridor are being discussed. This will contribute to a multiple increase in the volume of mutual trade, the indicators of which today do not correspond to the potential of our countries.

In this context, it is important to note that Qatar supports Uzbekistan’s efforts for a peaceful settlement in Afghanistan. Our country, in turn, fully supports Qatar’s actions to provide emergency humanitarian aid to the people of Afghanistan.

The cultural and humanitarian ties between our two countries are based on common spiritual and cultural values and traditions, as well as the sacred religion of Islam.

Qatar highly appreciates the contribution of prominent thinkers and scholars who lived and worked in the territory of modern Uzbekistan to the development of Islamic civilization and historical ties between the Arabian Peninsula and Maverannahr. This contributes to the further development of intercultural dialog and opens good prospects for interaction in the sphere of tourism, including pilgrimage tourism. Thus, since March 1, 2021, a 10-day visa-free regime has been introduced for Qatari citizens to enter Uzbekistan, and in June 2023 this period was extended to 30 days. On the basis of the signed intergovernmental agreement between the two countries air communication has been established

Cooperation is developing between the Centre for Islamic Civilization of Uzbekistan and the National Library of Qatar. Uzbek and Qatari scholars are conducting joint research on manuscripts on the history of Central Asia stored in the library, exchanging digital sources of works by Uzbek scholars and thinkers, and cooperating in the digitization and study of manuscripts.

The Days of Culture of Uzbekistan held in the capital of Qatar in the fall of 2022, which included concerts by the State Symphony Orchestra of Uzbekistan and an exhibition of folk arts and crafts, were warmly welcomed by the Qatari public.

In June 2021, Uzbekistan and Qatar signed a Cooperation Agreement on football development, solidarity, exchange of experience, organization of competitions, coaching education and safety of playing processes.

DOHA, Qatar: On Tuesday morning, the Amir, HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, departed Doha and traveled to the neighbouring country of Uzbekistan.

The Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award winners will be honoured in a ceremony in Tashkent in collaboration with the UN, which the Emir will attend alongside President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

The Amir and the President of Uzbekistan are scheduled to engage in discussions to enhance and foster bilateral relations. During the talks, they will also address various regional and international issues of mutual interest. A formal delegation accompanies the Emir.

DOHA:  Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, also Qatar’s top diplomat, will begin the Europe visit on Tuesday, Arab media reported.

Qatar’s Foreign ministry spokesperson Majed Alansari stated the diplomatic mission is part of “official visits by a number of brotherly ministers of foreign affairs to some of the permanent members of the UNSC to push for an immediate truce in the Gaza Strip”. Sheikh Mohammed’s also includes the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

“This step comes on behalf of all member nations of the Arab League and OIC to push for a serious effort to attain a permanent and comprehensive peace,” Alansari maintained.

Meanwhile, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit held meetings with several Arab and foreign officials in Bahrain on the sidelines of the annual IISS Manama Dialogue security moot.

Aboul Gheit recently also discussed the situation of Gaza with Lord Tariq Ahmad, the UK’s minister of state for the Middle East.  He also spoke to EU’s high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, Josep Borrell.  He briefed Borrell about the Arab approach to end the war and to find a permanent solution to the Palestinian cause in accordance with the vision of the two states.

The death toll in Israeli strikes on Gaza since October 7 has reached 13,000, including more than 5,500 children and 3,500 women, local media reported on Sunday.

According to the government office in Gaza, the number of wounded has exceeded more than 30,000, with over 75% of them being women and children.

The administration stated that the number of missing people crossed 6,000, with most of them suspected of lying under the debris of the destroyed buildings.

UN chief Antonio Guterres has said that he was “deeply shocked” that two United Nations schools were struck within 24 hours in Gaza, killing and injuring dozens of innocent people mostly children and women “as they were seeking protection in UN premises.”

Pakistani teacher Sister Zeph, who founded her own school for underprivileged children in the courtyard of her home in Gujranwala, has won the Global Teacher Prize 2023.

“We are delighted to announce that Sister Zeph, an English, Urdu, culture, inter-faith harmony, climate change teacher at Gujranwala, Punjab in Pakistan, has been named the winner of the Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize 2023..,” the orgnisation announced in a statement.

The award was organised in collaboration with UNESCO and in strategic partnership with Dubai Cares, a UAE-based global philanthropic organisation.

Sister Zeph was selected from over 7,000 nominations and applications for the Global Teacher Prize from 130 countries around the world.

The Pakistani teacher accepted her award on November 8, 2023, at a ceremony that took place at UNESCO’s General Conference in Paris, as per the official statement.

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay congratulated the Pakistani teacher on receiving the prestigious award.

“We all remember a teacher who has had an impact on our life and changed our future. It may sound like a truism but it’s true: teachers are life-changers. Congrats to Sister Zeph from Pakistan, 2023 Global Teachers Prize Winner. Thanks to her for her commitment as a life-changer!” she wrote on her X handle.

Who is Sister Zeph?

Pakistani teacher Sister Zeph founded her own school for underprivileged children in the courtyard of her home at the age of just 13 for children whose parents cannot pay fees.

She worked eight-hour days to fund the school, then taught students for another four hours, and then stayed up at night teaching herself.

Twenty-six years later, the school, now housed in a brand-new building, provides free education for more than 200 underprivileged children. From a young age she faced adversity, and emerged as a beacon of hope for underprivileged children in her wider community.

Many of her students from humble backgrounds have gone to work for her education and empowerment foundation while others have gone on to very successful professional careers.

As well as running the school, she runs self-defence classes for girls, having herself been attacked and threatened.

She also provides financial assistance to families choosing between educating their children and paying their bills and runs a vocational centre that has helped more than 6,000 women gain skills in ICT, textiles, and the English language.

Her dedication to education and empowerment has touched countless lives and earned her numerous awards, recognizing her as a true change-maker and advocate for women’s rights and children’s education around the world.

With the Global Teacher Prize funds, Sister Zeph plans to build a school on 10 acres where children from the poorest families in the country can be educated without discrimination.

She would also like to create a shelter for orphans, where food would be grown on the property and teachers from all parts of the world would be invited to instruct them in a range of subjects.
